Activity After Weight Loss Surgery
Weight loss surgery is major surgery and as a result physical activity will be diminished in the first few weeks after your procedure.
Immediately After Surgery
After the weight loss procedure, we do suggest that patients walk as much as possible, until they are fatigued. The improved blood circulation that results from a good walk will not only help speed healing, but also aid in weight loss. Walking may also help avoid many post-surgery complications including blood clots. Walking after surgery is not dangerous unless too much strain is put on the body, therefore we recommend that you stop the minute you feel fatigued.
A Few Weeks after Surgery
About 4-6 weeks after surgery, patients will start to resume their normal activities including going back to work. By this time, due to dietary restrictions after the procedure, some weight will have been lost and signs of improvement in obesity related diseases such as type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep apnea will become apparent.
While your surgeon may tell you that it is OK to perform most of your pre-surgery activities, it is advised not to lift over 15 pounds for 6 weeks. Not only can it have a negative effect on your recently performed surgery, but you can develop other issues requiring surgery such as a hernia. Re-surgery of any type so soon carries additional risk.
Long Term
Long-term, patients will be able to continue their activities and most likely perform some that they haven’t in many years such as:
- Taking a long romantic walk with their spouse or significant other
- Playing with their children for the first time in years
- Tying their shoes with no difficulty at all
- Fitting comfortably into a plane or movie theater seat
- Being able to perform and complete a cardiovascular workout
- Playing sports
While the responsibility lies with the patient to stick to a proper diet and exercise regimen, most of our patients are able to experience an array of activities that they haven’t in years. As a result, the sheer enjoyment of being able to perform these newly found activities may keep their weight loss on track.
Remember exercise is a significant part of a successful surgery. Find activities that your really enjoy and relish the thought of being able to perform them.
