Do I Qualify for Weight Loss Surgery?

At Advanced Surgical Associates, our Weight Loss Program is designed to determine, firstly, whether you qualify for weight loss surgery. Qualifying depends on many factors including your current weight, your history of weight loss, and co-morbidities you may be suffering from such as diabetes, acid reflux, asthma and high blood pressure. We provide an educational bariatric orientation session that is mandatory for all potential candidates after which you can schedule a consultation with one of our bariatric surgeons to discuss your weight loss history and current weight-related health conditions. Before you have surgery, we require that you undergo psychological, medical and nutritional evaluations to ensure that you are both physically and emotionally ready.

There are several medically accepted criteria for defining morbid obesity and determining whether or not you may qualify for our weight loss surgery program. You are likely to be morbidly obese if you are:

  • More than 100 pounds over your ideal body weight
  • Have Body Mass Index (BMI) or over 40, or
  • Have a BMI of over 35 and are experiencing significant negative health effects, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, related to being severely overweight.
  • Unable to achieve a healthy body weight for a sustained period of time, even through medically- supervised dieting.

Weight loss surgeons and health insurance companies each have a set of criteria to determine if you qualify for a bariatric procedure. But the first step is yours. We hope that this website will give you the important information you need to contact ASA to begin the prequalification process.
