Qualifying for Weight Loss Surgery

At Advanced Surgical Associates, our weight loss program is designed to determine whether you qualify for weight loss surgery. Qualifying depends on many factors including your current weight, your history of weight loss, and whether you’re suffering from co-morbidities such as diabetes, acid reflux, sleep apnea, asthma and high blood pressure. We provide a bariatric orientation seminar and education session that is mandatory for all potential candidates. After the seminar you can schedule a consultation with one of our bariatric surgeons where you’ll discuss your weight loss history and current weight-related health conditions.

There are several medically accepted criteria for defining morbid obesity and determining whether or not you may qualify for our weight loss surgery program. You are likely to be morbidly obese if you are:

  • Have Body Mass Index (BMI) or over 40, or
  • Have a BMI of over 35 and are experiencing significant negative health effects related to being severely overweight, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
  • Unable to achieve a healthy body weight for a sustained period of time, even through medically supervised dieting.

Weight loss surgeons and health insurance companies each have a set of criteria to determine if you qualify for a bariatric procedure. We hope that this website will give you the important information you need to contact ASA and begin the prequalification process.

Calculate Your BMI

BMI calculators have been the basic standard by which the average patient can help determine his or her eligibility for weight loss surgery. The BMI calculator can both describe what weight category you fall into and help you track your weight with a simple easy-to-understand number. BMI calculations are approximate values and are intended to be used only as a rough guide. BMI calculators do not take into account muscle structure and age.

The BMI is calculated by multiplying your mass in lbs by 703 and dividing your height in inches squared: weight (lbs) x 703 / height(in)2.
