Women & Weight Loss Surgery

Women tend to undergo bariatric surgery more often than men. At our practice, for example, women make up about 65% of our patient census. While there is no one reason why women turn to bariatric surgery more than men, some possible factors may include societal pressures, fertility concerns and unique health issues. Many of the causes and effects of obesity in women are different or more pronounced than those in men. The physical and mental toll that obesity takes on a woman can be overwhelming. Bariatric surgery can have a profoundly positive effect on a host of women’s problems including:

Menstruation, Fertility and Pregnancy

The negative effects of obesity on the reproductive system are significant. Obesity can affect a woman’s ability to ovulate, menstruate and become pregnant. Self-Image and Depression

Women are 5x more likely than men to experience depression and obesity only heightens the problem. It is a vicious cycle. As we become depressed, we gain weight and as we gain weight we become more depressed as our self image struggles. Cancer

While the root cause of the problem is still unknown, there is clinical data showing that obesity can cause certain forms of cancer including postmenopausal breast, endometrial, kidney and esophageal cancers.
